Cooper Vineyard, Amador County
TASTING NOTES
The 2021 Cooper Barbera has a purple color of significant depth with the bright youthful hues one would expect from a high acid variety such as Barbera. Aromas of fully ripened red raspberries and currants couple seamlessly with a toasted and smoky oak bouquet to deliver a rich and satisfying scent. Notes of nutmeg, hazelnut, caramel, and butter add a suggestion of flaky pastry crust which brings a complexity to the wine that only grows with time in the glass. Plums, currants, and cherries join the raspberries to provide succulent juicy flavors with a brightness that is Barbera. Fourteen months in barrels provides a creamy texture to the wine and lengthens a finish that lingers long after the wine is gone. This is one savory, juicy, creamy wine. It just doesn’t get much better than this.

We are not the only winery to enjoy the success of offering a Barbera from the Dick Cooper Vineyard. At last count, close to three dozen vintners purchase Barbera from Dick. Wines with the Cooper Vineyard designation command a premium in the marketplace, and rightfully so. Earlier this fall I participated in a round table discussion regarding the Barbera from the Cooper
Ranches. I was asked; What makes the Cooper Barbera special? My response was, “Dick Cooper.” Dick has been growing Barbera here in Amador County for over thirty years. He is the reason Barbera has become one of the county’s most highly regarded red grape varieties. His steady nerves and down to
earth attitude are ideal for growing premium wine grapes, and his experience coaxes an added dimension of flavor and intensity into the fruit he delivers. Wine made from the Cooper Vineyard distinguishes itself with an added lift to the grape’s classic raspberry aroma and a distinguishing perfume of lilac and violets we just don’t get from grapes grown elsewhere. The
wine has a sense of purpose and a bit more weight than Barbera produced from neighboring vineyards. It is more than just ‘pretty’, it’s like Dick Cooper himself, it’s classy.
