Italy
produces more wine than any other country.
When I was younger Italy and France would trade titles as the most
prolific wine producer, but lately Italy seems to have the edge. The most widely planted red grape in the
country that produces the most wine is Sangiovese. So, it makes sense that the winery that specializes
in red varietals from throughout the world would make Sangiovese. We do.
In fact, we make two, and if you count Rose; three.
We
use two sources for Sangiovese grapes; The Pioneer Hill Vineyard planted at the
Massoni Ranch here in the Shenandoah Valley and “The Hill” Vineyard planted on
Ridge Road just south of Sutter Creek. We
produce about 500 cases from the Pioneer Hill Vineyard and just over 100 cases
from “The Hill”. The wine from Pioneer Hill
is generally lighter in color and texture and in a Chianti style while the wine
from “The Hill” is closer to a Brunello with dark color and firm tannins. In Tuscany the classic pairing for Sangiovese
is with Cinghiale or wild boar. Whenever
Margie makes lamb shanks, or we have venison or other game I will reach for Sangiovese.
It also goes well with pasta sauces that
include sausage.
