The 2021 vintage has a deep almost purple/black color. I can’t remember a vintage with a more
intense color than this. And despite the
wines density the hues remain bright and youthful. The aromas are of ultra-ripe
mulberry, briary huckleberry, and plums.
Aged in barrels that were toasted over a hickory generated
flame provides the bouquet with a unique smoky scent I associate with roasted game as well as nuanced notes of cacao and coffee. With time in the glass our hallmark sweet caramel
scent makes an appearance. On the palate, savory
flavors of ripe
dense black fruits have married well with those of smoky deeply toasted almost roasted oak.
As with past years we are flirting with some late harvest characters and
while we have achieved plenty of density and richness, we have done so without crossing
to the dark side of stewed or cooked fruit, there are no signs of molasses or
soy. Due to our methods of extracting the color and flavor from the skins of
the grapes we have produced a wine with plenty of texture, yet it remains supple and free of astringent chewy tannins. It doesn’t hurt when the grapes come to us
fully ripened and the tannins are mature to start with. The fruit component of this vintage lingers
deep into the finish before yielding to a flinty minerality along with mocha,
coffee, and dark chocolate. This is a big brawny red wine and while I am
hesitant to suggest time in the cellar for Syrah, the acidity in the 2021 wine
should hold the fruit while additional complexities develop.
