Of all the
different grapes cultivated in Amador County we are best known for our
Zinfandel. We have been growing
Zinfandel for a long time. The oldest
Zinfandel Vineyard in the country is in Amador and dates to 1869. We also grow a lot of Zinfandel. In 2023 we grew 1,762 acres. The second most widely planted variety is
Cabernet Sauvignon with just 243 acres.
Amador County grows more Zinfandel than all the other red varieties
combined. I like to refer to Amador
County as the ‘Kingdom’ of Zinfandel. Here at Jeff Runquist Wines, we produce
six different Zinfandels, all from Amador, and since the most renown grower in
Amador County is Dick Cooper we would be negligent if we did not to produce a
Zinfandel that reflects Dick’s interpretation of Amador’s namesake varietal.
