Silvaspoons Vineyard, Lodi
TASTING NOTES:
The 2023 Touriga has a deep dark purple color with youthful hues that contain a suggestion of magenta. The aromas feature a dense concentrated mélange of dark fruits: blackberry, olallieberry, and mulberry. The floral lift absent from the 2022 vintage is back providing nuances of violets and lavender. A bouquet of raspberry caramel, toasted hazelnuts and milk chocolate is the result of fourteen months of aging in small oak barrels. On the pallet the flavors are delivered by a wine with a mouth coating viscosity that is both savory and succulent. Bright juicy flavors of black raspberry, currants, and blueberries are married with toasty oak. The tannins are so well integrated into this wine as to be nonexistent. The finish of crisp fruit and smoky oak lingers well after the wine is swallowed.

Touriga (Nacional)
has quietly become one of Portugal’s premier red grapes. It is not widely planted outside of Portugal
and here in California we grow just 321 acres of Touriga, half of it in San
Joaquin County. Historically Touriga has
been one of the principal varieties used to produce Port, and in Portugal it
continues in this role; but it has also become increasingly popular in the production
of unfortified red table wine. We acknowledge and appreciate the versatility of
Touriga and use it to produce both a Port style dessert wine we call Sisney and
a red table wine from this variety.
Since the introduction of Sisney into our line up in 2019, Touriga has
played the leading role in its production.
We have produced Touriga as a table wine since 2006 and we remain
impressed with its color, dark red fruit aromas and flavors, and soft tannins;
an ideal fit for our ‘House Style’.
