Nostro Vino Vineyard, Amador County
TASTING NOTES:
The 2023 "R" Zinfandel has a dark ruby-purple color with the
beginnings of a carmine hue.  The aroma is
classic “Old Vine” Zinfandel; dusty black raspberry, dark plums and late season
blackberries.  The bouquet provides a soft
scent of milk chocolate with notes of vanilla and hazelnut. The flavors of the
2023 vintage are big and savory with loads of succulent mulberry fruit and a
generous portion of toasted oak.  Grapes that
reflect the Steiner Road terroir have produced a wine with good depth and
extraction, but as always the tannins are mature and balanced.  The finish is long and harmonious with a
subtle note of toasty oak that lingers well after the wine is gone  This wine cries out for a smoked tri-tip with
chimichurri.

In 1995 when I produced my first commercial wine under my own label
we called it “Z” Zinfandel.  The
objective of the “Z” Zinfandel was to produce a refined and elegant Zinfandel
from Amador County, a region known for its robust, extracted and often high
octane Zinfandel.  We were successful and
to this day the “Z” Zinfandel is one of our most popular and best selling
wines.  However there was a downside to
our success.  Some folks seeing Amador on
the label had expectations of the substantial regional flavors and were not impressed
with the softer more elegant wine and quipped, “Where’s the beef?”   Our answer
is the Nostro Vino Zinfandel from Tom Dillian’s Steiner Road vineyard.  Tom’s
vineyard faces due north and is higher in elevation than the Massoni Ranch
plantings, the home of the “Z” Zinfandel.
As a result, the Nostro Vino vineyard is one of the last to bud out in
the spring and also one to the last to ripen in the fall while the Massoni
Ranch is often one of the first.  The
grapes grown in the Nostro Vino Vineyard mature slowly and the sugar climbs
higher before the flavors are balanced and we harvest the grapes.  The wines produced from the Nostro Vino Vineyard’s grapes
are substaintial, with more color and depth than the Massoni Ranch.  They also come with more extract and tannin
and usually a point or two more alcohol.
For fans of the Amador County Style Zinfandel:  “Here’s the beef”.
