TASTING NOTES:
The 2024 vintage has a deep purple color, not quite
inky but getting close. Savory aromas of ripe dark fruits; marionberry and briary
blackberry have married with a bouquet of mocha, caramel, and dark chocolate to
create an enticing invitation. The
flavors are both creamy and succulent with loads of black currant and well-seasoned
oak. The fully integrated tannins
express themselves as a viscous mouth coating texture that leads to a lingering
finish that seems infinite. While the tannins are in check, a few years in the
cellar will add an additional dimension of complexity to the wine. Meanwhile, the
fruit will be sustained by the wine’s solid acidity until this is accomplished. Grilled steaks, roast beef, braised red meats
and stews are the order of the day for this wine. It goes well with a juicy hamburger too.

Historically
Petite Sirah was used primarily for blending.
Renowned for its intense color, rich black fruit flavors and bold
tannins, it is a wonderful winemaking tool capable of lifting a lackluster red
wine to another level. If not tempered, a
stand-alone Petite Sirah can be so intense as to be unpleasant. Often Petite Sirah can feel like a solvent
removing the enamel from one’s teeth the tannins are so strong. There is a reason the trade organization
promoting Petite Sirah calls their tasting circuit the ‘Blue Tooth Tour’.
I
discovered Petite Sirah from the Clarksburg appellation in the early 1990’s and
was pleased to find that the region produces Petite Sirah wine that is
considerably softer than if the grapes were grown in a coastal
appellation. Taking care not to damage
the seeds, the major source of tannin in a grape, during the fermentation and
pressing has also contributed significantly to our ability to deliver a
full-flavored Petite Sirah without the mouth gripping extract that many find
objectionable. If you are familiar with
Petite Sirah but haven’t tried ours you are in for a pleasant surprise.
