Teroldego has some
history here in Amador County. For more
than twenty years Montevina and then Terra D’Oro produced a Teroldego. For some reason it never gained much traction,
and I haven’t seen it on the shelves for some time. Just over ten years ago Ron McManis planted
some Teroldego in his Creekside vineyard in the Jahant District of Lodi. Rumor had it that Gallo was looking at
Teroldego to fuel its Apothic program, a brand featuring an array of deeply
pigmented red wines. I was intrigued and
asked to try some. Ron graciously agreed
and with its growing popularity this year we will crush nine tons of Teroldego.
Teroldego comes from the
Northeast corner of Italy from a region called Alto Adige. You may recognize the region, and you would
be correct to associate it with Pinot Gris.
However, Teroldego also does quite well there, and I must say it does
well in Lodi too. We get great color,
soft tannins and plenty of dark fruit.
