TASTING NOTES:
The 2024 Touriga
has a dark almost inky purple color with youthful hues. The aromas feature a scent I have come to
call ‘Triple Berry Pie Filling” a dense concentrated mélange of dark fruits: blackberry,
olallieberry, and huckleberry. Touriga
is the most floral of the red grapes we work with. The 2024 vintage has a strong floral lift providing
an unmistakable scent of both violets and lavender. The intensity of this year’s fruit casts a
shadow over the bouquet. With some time
in the glass subtle notes of caramel and toasted hazelnuts will emerge. The scent of this wine is primarily that of
the aroma; ripe dark fruit and a floral perfume. On the pallet the flavors are delivered
by a wine with a mouth coating viscosity that is both savory and succulent. Bright juicy flavors of black cherry, currants,
and blueberries are married with toasty oak.
The tannins are so mellow as to be nonexistent. The finish of crisp fruit and smoky oak
lingers well after the wine is swallowed.

The global market
for Port wine has declined 16% from 8.7 million cases in 2013 to just 7.3
million cases in 2023. This reduction in
demand has growers in Portugal searching for other uses for their grapes
traditionally used to produce the dessert wine Port. Many growers have turned to table wine as a
potential home for their grapes no longer needed for Port. This has led to a search for which of the
over 140 varieties used to produce Port is the most suitable for red table
wine. To date the undisputed winner is
Touriga. Touriga has quietly become the
leading grape in Portugal for red table wine.
Touriga produces full-bodied red wines with intense dark fruit
(blackberry, plum, blueberry), floral violet and mint notes, and complex
undertones of chocolate, licorice, spice (vanilla, nutmeg, pepper), and
sometimes earthy minerality or tea. It's known for its powerful tannins
and structure, often likened to Napa Cabernet or Barossa Shiraz, but with a
unique Portuguese floral lift and aging potential.
We produce two
Touriga wines, one from Ron Silva’s vineyard in the Alta Mesa District in Lodi
and a second from our Peroni Ranch Estate vineyard adjacent to the winery. The Lodi wine is a midweight version of
Touriga with a juicy succulence and soft tannins that do not require aging to
provide a smooth richness to the finish.
The Estate wine on the other hand has a bit more intensity and a year or
two in the cellar may be in order.
