Barbera is the third most widely planted red variety in Italy surpassed only by Sangiovese and Montepulciano. Over sixty percent of the Barbera grown in Italy is in Piedmont where it is the leading variety in the region. Barbera was first planted in Amador County by Cary Gott in 1974, but it was Dick Cooper that picked up Barbera and ran with it. In Amador, Dick is by far the largest grower of Barbera growing 43 acres of the county’s total of 208 acres. He sells Barbera grapes to close to three dozen different vintners. We have been producing a Barbera from the Cooper Ranch since the turn of the millennium.
